FIFA Arab Cup 2021
- Adama Ba is an executive of the selection of Mauritania
- He participated in the first CAN of Mourabitounes
- He now dreams of qualifying for the FIFA Arab Cup
Adama Ba left his town of Gouraye at a very young age to study in France. Since then, he has worn the colors of a few renowned clubs and has established himself as one of the pillars of the selection of Mauritania.
Ba began his professional career in Brest, before joining Bastia. During his stay in Corsica, he became the first Mauritanian to score in Ligue 1. The rest of his career took him to Niort and Auxerre. In 2017, he packed his bags for Gaziantep, Turkey. A little later, we find him at Giresunspor. Transferred to Nahdet Berkane, in Morocco, he has been loaned since the beginning of the year to Lamia, a Greek formation.
His promising start to his career in Europe also earned him the honor of his first selection for the Mauritania team at the age of 20. It thus contributes to the first historical qualification of Mourabitounes for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, in 2019.
A long-term project
Ba’s life takes an unexpected turn when recruiters from Brest spot him playing a match with his amateur club, Metallo Sport. He joined the Brest training center and, a few years later, he made his debut in Ligue 1. Asked about this introduction, Ba replied bluntly: “Initially, I came to France to study, but I knew that by going there, there would be no shortage of opportunities to play football, “he recalls at the microphone of FIFA.com.
Seduced by these first performances, the Mauritanian leaders summoned him in October 2013. A friendly double confrontation against Canada allowed him to sign his first goal with the Mourabitounes. “My first year with the national team corresponds to the start of a long-term project launched by the Mauritanian federation. Match after match, year after year, I have learned a lot. Mauritanian football is on an upward trajectory,” said one who has the ambition to participate in the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup ™, a goal that goes through a victory over Yemen on June 22. “I am proud to defend the colors of my country. When I scored my first goal for Mauritania, I realized one of my oldest dreams. I will never forget it.”
Progression and qualification
Ba thus participates in his country’s first qualification for the CAF African Cup of Nations in 2019, where he plays all three matches for his team in the first round. Despite an early elimination, he draws up a largely positive assessment of this adventure. In these eyes, Egypt 2019 represents the fruit of the federation’s efforts to support the progress of the national team, but also of the excellent work carried out by the coach, Corentin Martins. “Our presence in the final phase comes to concretize the investment of the Mauritanian federation and its president, Ahmed Ould Yahya, who has always believed in the football of his country. We owe him a lot”, explains the international of 27 years.
Since then, Ba and Mauritania have validated their ticket for the next edition of the continental meeting, scheduled for next year. “Corentin Martins has also contributed to our progress. We have learned a lot from him. He is a coach and a former high level player,” said the attacking midfielder. “This performance is the crowning of hard work. It was our first appearance at this level. The joy of finally entering the final phase and the memories of this great adventure will remain with us for a long time to come.”
Before its second CAN, Mauritania may have the opportunity to play soon another big tournament: the Arab Cup 2021. To be on the trip, it will have to get rid of Yemen. Qualification will be played in one match. “It’s an important and difficult game ahead, but we will give our all to get into this tournament,” Ba warns. “Our team spirit remains our best asset. It is thanks to him that we are where we are today. It is up to us to do our best to qualify for the final phase,” he concluded.
