- From May 3 to 9, 2021, 13 teams will meet in Guatemala
- Domo Polideportiv hosted matches of the Futsal World Cup in 2000
- Semi-finalists will directly qualify for Lithuania 2021
The Concacaf Futsal Championship will take place in Guatemala City (Guatemala), May 3-9. All the posters for this seventh edition will take place at Domo Polideportivo, a site familiar to those who are used to international competitions in the region. And for good reason: this hall notably hosted matches of the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Cup ™.
Since 1996, the Concacaf Futsal Championship has been organized every four years. It also serves as a qualifying tournament for the major world event in the discipline. Title-holders, Costa Rica are also the team that most often put their name on the record of the event. The Ticos triumphed in 2000, 2012 and 2016. The United States, winners in 1996 and 2004, follow just behind, while Guatemala claimed the title in 2008.
At the end of the group stage (May 3-5), the teams which occupy the first two places in each group will qualify for the second stage. The quarter-finals will take place on May 7. The nations which emerge victorious from these duels will advance to the semi-finals and at the same time validate their ticket for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Lithuania 2021 ™. The semi-finals and the final will be played on May 8 and 9, respectively.
After winning the title in 2016, Costa Rica arrives in Guatemala with great ambitions. The Ticos in any case seem on an upward trajectory, as evidenced by their recent successes over Trinidad and Tobago (7-1 and 8-2). The whole country is now hoping to see their team seal a fifth appearance in the supreme event. During the last edition, in Colombia, Costa Rica was the only representative of Concacaf to reach the round of 16, signing in passing the best performance in its history.
Cuba, Guatemala and Panama also have the advantage of experience. Indeed, these three countries were present alongside Costa Rica in 2016, in Colombia. If the first two returned empty-handed, Panama distinguished themselves by winning a prestigious victory against Uzbekistan. However, the three teams were forced to pack their bags at the end of the group stage.
The United States remains the Concacaf country with the most Futsal World Cup victories to this day. They are also the only representatives of the region to have reached the semi-finals. After securing third place in the Netherlands in 1989, they stepped onto the second step of the podium three years later in Hong Kong.
Under the leadership of Dusan Jakica, appointed coach of the United States futsal team in September 2019, the Stars and Stripes will therefore try to reconnect with a final phase that has eluded them since 2008. The Americans had yet participated in five of the first six editions of the Futsal World Cup (1989, 1992, 1996, 2004, 2008).
