- Luka Modric is the most capped player in Croatian history
- He played his 135th international match, against Cyprus
- He talks about this record at the microphone of FIFA.com
“In all respects, I believe that Luka Modric deserves to be considered the best Croatian player of all time”, judged in the summer of 2018 by Robert Prosinecki, himself considered one of the greatest players Croats of History. A little earlier, Croatia, led by their captain, had reached the final of the FIFA World Cup ™ for the first time in their history. In the process, Modric was elected FIFA World Player.
Two and a half years later, the Real Madrid midfielder has only confirmed Prosinecki’s comments. Better still: on March 27, Modric added a new record to his collection. In the qualifying match for the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Cyprus (1-0), he honored his 135th selection, which has now earned him a lead from Darijo Srna in the ranking of the most capped Croatian players.
FIFA.com met Luka Modric to discuss this feat, and his goals on the road to Qatar 2022.
Luka Modric, what does it feel like to become the most capped player in Croatian history?
That’s wonderful ! I am proud and happy. It is a great honor to beat this record, even if I must admit that I did not think too much about it at the start. We had other more important goals with the national team. But when I saw this record come closer, I really wanted to beat it. I was fortunate enough to achieve it.
You are 35 years old. Will the UEFA EURO this summer be your last big tournament?
We will see what will happen after the Euro. In this competition, we will have to close ranks because we inherited a difficult group. Despite some absences, we have the qualities required to play an important role in this tournament. Obviously, we can never promise anything, but we will approach the Euro with a lot of hope and ambition. We will do everything to justify the reputation that has been ours since the last World Cup. We must represent Croatian football with dignity.
Are you happy with your career, or do you feel like you are still missing something?
Whatever the past successes, in club or in selection, we always want more. When we win a trophy or achieve a feat, we have only one idea in mind: to start again. As long as I am a footballer, I will continue to have ambitions. With Croatia I want to experience other great moments and with my club I want to keep fighting for titles, as long as I am given the opportunity. I prepare and work accordingly. We’ll see how long it will last.
After two days, Croatia, vice-world champion, totals one victory and one defeat in qualifying for the World Cup. Are you disappointed?
We can say that we have not started this campaign in the best possible way, both in terms of the game and the results. Since the World Cup every game has become more difficult. All of our opponents are very motivated to beat us. It’s up to us to rediscover the level of play that was ours in Russia, the one that made Croatia famous. The beginnings leave something to be desired, but it is after the last day that we will do the accounts. I am convinced that we are the best team in this group and we will prove it in the matches.
