On the road to Qatar 2020
Al Duhail dominated the Qatari Stars League for several years. The arrival on the bench of Djamel Belmadi coincides with a particularly prosperous period for the club, which then collects titles. Following the departure of the former Marseillais, now Algeria coach, the team is going through a period of turbulence which allows Al Sadd, its great rival, to clinch the title in 2018/19. Renowned coaches and players followed one another, until Al Duhail returned to victory in 2020. The Red Knights take the title one point ahead of Al Rayan and six more over Al Sadd. Al Sadd’s failure in the AFC Champions League allows them to definitively validate their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020 ™.
Sabri Lamouchi, who embodies a new generation of technicians, began his career at the helm of Didier Drogba and Gervinho in Côte d’Ivoire. The French of Tunisian origin then made a stint in El Jaish (Qatar), before being appointed coach of Rennes. The rest of his journey took him across the Channel to put down his suitcases in Nottingham Forest. Recruited the day after the club’s victory in the Stars League, it is now his responsibility to prepare for the future, starting with the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020.
What we can expect
Al Duhail is considered an attacking team, although the departure of Youssef El Arabi may leave a void in attack. In defense, Mehdi Benatia, passed notably by Juventus and Bayern Munich, brings his high level experience. If Al Duhail wants to go far in this competition, he will certainly have to rely on these two players with impressive pedigrees.
At the state
1 – Al Duhail is set to play his first FIFA Club World Cup. The Red Knights have never won the AFC Champions League and last year, for the first edition organized in Qatar, it was Al Sadd who was responsible for representing the host country.
