• FIFA Legends Kaká, Javier Mascherano et Júlio César attended a press conference
  • On the menu, in particular, the final of Qatar 2020 between Tigres and Bayern Munich
  • Can the Covid-19 pandemic result in the sacrifice of a generation?

Each year, the FIFA Club World Cup brings together the world’s greatest football experts. Three FIFA Legends Kaká, Javier Mascherano and Júlio César attended a press conference on February 9 at Education City Stadium in Doha, Qatar. For an hour, representatives of the international press submitted all their questions to them on the occasion of this event, which was broadcast online.

What do you expect from the 2020 Club World Cup final?

Javier Mascherano : I hope that this match will make the happiness of the greatest number. Anyway, I can’t wait to be there. The Tigers have written a page of history as, for the first time, a CONCACAF representative will participate in this poster. For their part, Bayern Munich has been one of the heavyweights of European football for many years.

How do you feel about playing in stadiums that will also be used during the World Cup?

Julius Caesar : We have discovered extraordinary stadiums, with magnificent infrastructures. I think the supporters will be very pleasantly surprised when they see them in turn.

If they win, Bayern would equal the record of Barcelona, your former club, by winning a sixth title. How do you judge this performance?

Javier Mascherano : I was not part of this team; I arrived after. If the Germans win, we will be the first to congratulate them. They have been the best in Europe for two years and if they win this game they will make history. But I’m sure the supporters of Barça don’t want to see Bayern win because they don’t want to share this record!

How do you see this Tigers team?

Kaka : I find it very well organized. She puts in place a coherent strategy and she sticks to it.

Julius Caesar : The coach prepared very well for the semi-final. I was the first surprised to see Palmeiras getting so few chances.

Can the Mexicans beat Bayern in the final?

Kaka: At this level, it is essential to have a well-established battle plan. Bayern are currently among the best teams in the world, there is no doubt. We are going to have the chance to attend a beautiful duel, between two very great coaches.

Mascherano : I’m sure the Tigers will approach this game with the firm intention of imposing their style of play. They certainly won’t be intimidated. We feel that they are always trying to leave their mark on the game.

What do you think about stadiums without supporters?

Mascherano : Health comes first, of course. FIFA and Qatar have spared no efforts to ensure that this competition can take place, despite difficult conditions. You have to keep in mind that this competition is one of the few that can accommodate spectators. Of course, that affects us enormously. This is a positive signal.

Kaka: I can’t imagine what it feels like to play in these conditions. I asked players to tell me more about it and it seems to be very special. It’s strange to score a goal and not be able to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the stadium. It’s hard to imagine what that could represent. The stadiums are still 30% full, which is a good sign. It should make everyone optimistic.

Can the next generation of footballers suffer from the consequences of the pandemic?

Kaka: I remain optimistic. I try not to dwell too much on the bad news. I don’t think the next generation is lost. On the contrary, I think she will emerge stronger from this ordeal because she will have already overcome a completely new situation.

Mascherano : We don’t have a magic wand to remedy the situation. But I, too, am an optimist. It’s true, the youngsters haven’t been able to train, but we’re not going to lose a whole generation because of a year or a year and a half. You will see that in the end things will adjust on their own to the new reality.
