• Carlos Gonzalez arrived at Les Tigres in December to be associated with Gignac
  • He caused the penalty that gave the Mexicans victory against Palmeiras
  • He sees further: “We came here with the objective of winning the cup”

When the UANL Tigers recruited Carlos González in December 2020, the idea was to pair the Paraguayan striker with André-Pierre Gignac on the attacking front, especially during the FIFA Club World Cup, Qatar 2020 ™.

Mission accomplished as González was one of the great architects of the historic 1-0 victory over Palmeiras in the semi-finals, which made the Tigers the first Mexican club to win in the last four in 10 Aztec attempts at this stage.

The two previous confrontations between representatives of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL in the semi-finals had ended in South American victories without any conceded goal. With their new asset in the field, the Felines have ended these series. “We are there, with stars in our heads. We are very proud of what we have accomplished and I imagine that people are crying for joy. This victory is for them,” commented Charly González at the post-match press conference.

Double danger

The 28-year-old center-forward was recruited from the UNAM Pumas because of his qualities as a finisher. Facing Palmeiras, he did not find the net, the fault in particular of the talent of Weverton. In the first period, the Brazilian goalkeeper distinguished himself by pushing back his header at point blank range at the cost of one of the most beautiful parades in the competition.

Despite everything, González distinguished himself for his offensive contribution. Anchor point in the area, he freed Gignac, who was able to dezone and bring his qualities to the creation of the game. On several occasions, the Brazilian defense was taken by default by the attacking duo.

The perfect illustration of this double danger is the action at the origin of the winning penalty. González surprises Luan and passes him in front, forcing the defender to hang him by the shirt to prevent the face-to-face with Weverton. The referee whistles a penalty, which Gignac skilfully executes. The Mexicans will manage to keep this advantage until the end of the meeting.

No limit

“This victory, we went to look for it. We achieved our goal, we are happy to play this final that we dreamed of so much. Without the big game of the goalkeeper, the score could have been wider”, adds the Paraguayan striker, who completed his training in Chile before arriving in Mexico under the colors of Necaxa before two great years at the Pumas.

And to think that he almost missed the Club World Cup due to a muscle injury contracted in the Mexican league, a week before leaving for Qatar. Ferretti has also chosen to spare him when the Felines face au Ulsan Hyundai FC, not bringing him in until the second half.

True to his strong character and contagious energy, González sets no limits for himself. “We are the only Mexican club to have reached this stage, but we want more. We came here with the goal of winning the cup. Now we are very close, we are full of hopes and we are motivated thoroughly to complete our project “, he concludes.
