In 2008, Mohamed El Shenawy, goalkeeper for the Egyptian team and Al Ahly SC, had played only one official match for the Cairo club. It was against ENPPI and Al Ahly, already assured of being champion of Egypt, had aligned a team made up of young people and usual substitutes. The Red devils lost by three goals, the goalkeeper was no longer established and the club had finally decided to do without his services.

After leaving Al Ahly, El Shenawy traveled to El Gouna, a tourist resort in the city of Hurghada, 450 km from Cairo, in search of a new opportunity. But when he got there, he discovered that the home side had just hired another goalkeeper, Sherif Ekramy.

El Shenawy was not discouraged. He returned to Cairo, played at Tala’ea El Geish, before being loaned successively to El Entag El Harby, to Haras El Hodood, then transferred to Petrojet FC. In 2016, El Shenawy was given the opportunity of his life: to return to Al Ahly. The good performance of the Egyptian porter led the leaders of the Red devils to recruit the very man they had shown the door to in 2008.

A revenge and a dream

Ironically, it was Sherif Ekramy, who had blocked his way at El Gouna FC in 2008, who then kept the cages of Red devils. El Shenawy won at his expense and since then he has not stopped shining on his goal line.

El Shenawy also established himself as a starting point for the Egypt team, appearing in two of the three matches of the Pharaohs during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia ™. Always excellent with Al Ahly, he won the 2020 CAF Champions League and participates today in the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020 ™. Winner against Al Duhail SC, he then realized his dream of playing against Bayern Munich and hugging Manuel Neuer, the best goalkeeper in the world.

“We must not forget that he was the European champion against us. We were not unworthy. On the contrary, we did honor to Al Ahly and to the whole African continent. We learned a lot during this these matches “, estimated the last bulwark in Cairo after the defeat against the Germans, and already turned to the match for third place against Palmeiras. “With this great game we built up a lot of confidence ahead of the third place game. We are approaching it with great enthusiasm and without thinking about the loss to Bayern. We are sure Palmeiras has watched some of our games. and already know our strengths and weaknesses. We will have to be very careful, ”he concludes.
